latest from the south korean shadow government scandal

As President Park Geun-hye on Friday expressed willingness to be investigated over the Choi Soon-sil scandal, debate is moving toward the formalities and methods on what will be the first-ever investigation into a sitting leader.

The special prosecutors’ team in charge of the scandal is expected to examine possible scenarios and coordinate the procedure with Cheong Wa Dae, the Justice Ministry and the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office.

The probe should focus on whether Park was behind the speedy launch of two culture and sports funds with corporate donations totaling 77.4 billion won ($67.7 million), over which Choi and former top Presidential Secretary An Chong-bum are suspected to have peddled influence. Other potential charges include whether the president allowed confidential documents to be leaked to Choi and for her to meddle in other state affairs.

The prosecution has in the past questioned retired presidents and first ladies by sending written forms, making visits or summoning them in person.

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in central Seoul on Saturday to demand President Park Geun-hye’s resignation over a spiraling scandal involving her confidante Choi Soon-sil.

Some 200,000 people flocked to Gwanghwamun Square in the evening, according to organizers, signaling the undying public anger toward President Park despite her second televised apology a day earlier. The police estimate was 43,000 people.

The second massive rally since the Choi Soon-sil scandal surfaced was bigger than the first rally held last Saturday that organizers said drew about 40,000 people.

Book sold in Toronto justifies the practice of “slave-wives” in Islam

Book sold in Toronto justifies the practice of “slave-wives” in Islam

The booklet “The Prophet of Islam – The Ideal Husband” by Syed Abu Zafar Zain states that “family life is the base of all society, polity, culture and civilization, indeed of life itself. It is hoped that the study of this booklet will provide valuable guidance on the how and why of this important problem.”

The last chapter of the book presents questions and answers. “The following questions are generally raised by Orientalists, Jews and Christians out to present the Prophet of Islam [Mohammad] in a misguiding light,” the author writes.

CIJnews obtained a copy of the booklet that was purchased at one of ICNA Canada’s bookstores in the Greater Toronto Area. The following is an excerpt from the booklet (p. 61):

Question:

Why Islam permits an unlimited number of slave-women for marriage?

Answer:

As slaves, women face a worse lot than men. If they cannot get free by any other way, such as arranging ransom, the best solution for them is marriage.

A slave-wife becomes automatically free as soon as she becomes a mother or a widow. And her children are born free. They receive the same status as the children of her fellow free co-wives.

And how else are you going to honourably incorporate in your society women captured in war?”

Free Islamic books in Toronto: Jews are “enemies of Islam”, “liars”

Muslim Dawah (outreach, “call to Islam”) activists distribute for free at Toronto’s Dundas Square Islamic literature that portrays the “Jewish community” and the “Jews” as “avid enemy of Islam” and “liars.”

CIJnews obtained a copy of the booklet “The Amazing Quran” based upon lecture by Gary Miller handed out by Muslim activists at Dundas Square. A sticker on the booklet reads: “Walk-In Islamic infoCenter, 2535-1 Dundas street west, Toronto, ON M5G 1Z3, Canada. (647) 994-6807 & (647) 782-2303, [Email] info@collectquran.org [Facebook] WalkInIslamicInfoCenter. Learn Islam in 85 languages: www.collectfreequran.org

The following are excerpts from the booklet “The Amazing Quran” (p. 26-27):

An interesting example of a challenge contained in the Qur’an has to do with the relationship between Muslims and Jews.

The Qur’an is precise enough not to narrow its scope down to the relationship between individual members of each religion, but rather summarizes the relationship between the two groups of people as a whole.

In essence, the Qur’an states that the Christians will always treat Muslims better than the Jews will. Indeed, the full impact of such a statement can only be felt after careful consideration of the real meaning behind these words.

It is true that many Christians and Jews have accepted Islam, but as a whole, the Jewish community remains an avid enemy of Islam.

Do people actually realize what such an open declaration in the Qur’an suggests?

They might assume that it encourages animosity toward Jews, but in essence it is a straightforward invitation for the Jews to prove that the Qur’an is false — that it is not a divine revelation.

All they have to do is organize themselves, treat the Muslims well for a few years and then say, “Now what does your book say about who are best to you in the world — the Jews or the Christians? Look what we Jews have done for you!”

That is all they have to do to disprove the Qur’an’s authenticity, yet they have not done it in 1400 years. And the offer still stands!”
