Professor demands Title IX investigation after Northeastern prof calls for hatred of men

A University of Michigan-Flint professor is calling for a Title IX investigation at Northeastern University in response to a column by one of the school’s professors that openly advocated hatred against men.

Mark Perry, a professor of economics and finance at University of Michigan-Flint, submitted a request earlier this month to Northeastern’s Title IX department staff in response to sociology Professor Suzanna Walters’ Washington Post op-ed titled “Why can’t we hate men?”

In the op-ed, Walters, who is also director of Northeastern’s Women’s, Gender and Sexual Studies Program, wrote that it is “logical to hate men,” implying that if women do not hate men, they are not real feminists. She also suggested that in order for men to truly help push female equality they must “vote for feminist women only. Don’t run for office. Don’t be in charge of anything. Step away from the power.”

“And please know that your crocodile tears won’t be wiped away by us anymore. We have every right to hate you,” she added.

In an email to Northeastern, a copy of which was obtained by The College Fix, Perry argues that Walters violated the school’s own “Policy on Equal Opportunity” which “prohibits discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, religious creed, genetic information, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, ancestry, veteran or disability status.”

“She has not only publically demonized and belittled all males at Northeastern University, she called out publically for the universal hatred of all men, including all men at your university,” he wrote. “That makes Ms. Walters a confirmed sexist and bigot in violation of Title IX and your university’s own stated policies that prohibit such discrimination.”

Perry suggested that Northeastern should prevent Walters from teaching male students, or have sway on decisions relating to male colleagues in her department, and be forced to partake in diversity training/anger management courses to address her sexism.

“How would it be possible for Walters to publicly state that she hates all men and not discriminate against them, any more than a KKK racist who gives herself the right to hate all blacks or gays, would not likely discriminate against those groups?” Perry asked in his email.

“How could a male student ever expect fair, just and equitable treatment while taking a class from Professor Walters, who has publicly expressed hatred for all men?” he added. “How could a male faculty colleague applying for tenure and/or promotion in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology expect fair treatment from Professor Walters, after her public admission of hatred toward all men?”

Reached for comment via email, Perry told The College Fix that even though he does not teach at Northeastern, he felt the need to send the complaint because he was “repulsed by the unprecedented level of pure misandrist hatred Suzanna Walters expressed uniformly towards all men” in her opinion article.

“While various topics related to feminism, women’s issues and the #MeToo movement are open to debate among thoughtful people, and while opinions on those topics span a very wide range, the extreme position of hatred towards all men espoused by Walters crossed a certain accepted line of civility into vile hate speech,” he said. “And that type of hate speech targeted towards an entire group should not be tolerated on a college campus, or should at least have some sanctions, and really should never have appeared in the WaPo, in my opinion.”

“I’m waiting to see what happens and am anxious to see how NU reconciles a self-declared hate-mongering professor on its campus with its commitment to an inclusive campus environment that is free from hostility towards male students and faculty,” Perry added.

The Northeastern Title IX department and Walters did not respond to The College Fix’s request for comment on the matter.

An economics professor has filed a request for a Title IX investigation into a feminist gender studies professor who wrote an op-ed titled “why can’t we hate men?” in which she argues that hating men “seems logical.” Mark Perry argues that she shows clear prejudice and bigotry in her op-ed and that no male should expect fair treatment under or around her in the University.

Freeland announcing compensation for metals sector as she unveils list of U.S. products to be hit with tariffs

The federal government will announce a compensation package for Canada’s steel and aluminum industries on Friday when Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland releases the final list of U.S. products to be slapped with retaliatory tariffs starting Sunday.

Freeland, accompanied by Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains and Employment Minister Patty Hajdu, will make the announcement in Hamilton — the heart of Canada’s steel production and home to roughly a third of the 23,000 workers directly employed in the industry.

Both measures are a direct response to the 25 per cent tariffs U.S. President Donald Trump imposed on Canadian steel and aluminum imports nearly a month ago under a little-used national security provision in American law.

They also signal Canada’s willingness to fight the $16.6-billion in tariffs rather than capitulate to Trump’s protectionist agenda.

“Our point to the government has always been that we expect the Canadian tariffs to be truly reciprocal to protect producers and jobs in this country,” said Joseph Galimberti, president of the Canadian Steel Producers Association.

“If it’s 25 per cent being put on steel going to the U.S.,  it has to be 25 per cent on steel coming into Canada.”

NY-Israel flight delayed by ultra-Orthodox men’s refusal to sit next to women

An El Al flight from New York to Israel this week was delayed for over an hour due to the refusal by a number of ultra-Orthodox men to sit next to women.

Khen Rotem, who was on the flight, said passengers were taking their seats on the plane at John F. Kennedy International Airport when four ultra-Orthodox men boarded and refused to take their seats, as they were next to women.

One of them, he said, was “particularly devout and ascetic,” having got on the plane with his eyes closed and keeping them shut for the duration of the flight in an apparent effort to avoid looking at any woman on board.

“The crew tries to solve the problem. This doesn’t work. The female flight attendants clear space for the authoritative men on board… the ultra-Orthodox are not ready to speak with, or even look at the female flight attendants,” wrote Rotem in a Facebook post Friday.

“All the men in the crew, except for the captain, are now only dealing with this instead of preparing for takeoff and serving the passengers. The ultra-Orthodox don’t blink. One of the crew members threatens: ‘If you don’t sit down, you can get off the plane right now,’” added Rotem.

Despite the threat, the crew eventually gave in after a prolonged argument, “beginning the long diplomatic process of moving female passengers from their places.”

Eventually, “after a lot of writhing, shouts and maneuvering,” an elderly American women and a young Israeli woman agreed to switch seats, allowing the flight to proceed for takeoff.

Rotem noted that other yarmulke-clad men aboard expressed “surprise and revulsion” at the four ultra-Orthodox men’s conduct.

“The bottom line: At the time the El-Al plane was dealing with matters of practical theology and personal belief against individual rights and civil order, 12 planes from other companies cut ahead of the [El-Al] plane,” he wrote, saying the delay lasted 75 minutes.

Rotem called on El Al to clarify whether the airliner has an official policy on the issue.

“Can any traveler demand — and receive — moving other passengers from their places for their personal well-being and in accordance with their beliefs. Or is this a privilege reserved only for a segment of travelers,” he wrote.

El Al, Israel’s national carrier, later apologized for any “inconvenience” that was caused.

“Any discrimination against passengers is absolutely forbidden. El Al flight attendants do all they can in order to provide service to a wide variety of passengers with different and diverse requests and try to assist to the best of their ability,” Hadashot TV news quoted the company as saying.

“All this in order to take off on time and bring the passengers to their destination on schedule,” it added.

El Al has been known to regularly ask passengers to move seats at the request — and sometimes the demand — of ultra-Orthodox men who refuse to sit next to women.

Last year, the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court ruled that El Al cannot force women to change seats at the request of ultra-Orthodox men. The court agreed with Israel Religious Action Center, which brought the suit, in ruling the practice was illegal and discriminatory.
