Ford appoints former PC president as health adviser with $350K salary

TORONTO — Ontario’s new premier has appointed a former Progressive Conservative party president as a special adviser on health care.

Premier Doug Ford has named Dr. Rueben Devlin as chair of a new council on improving health care and ending so-called “hallway medicine,” a position that comes with a $348,000 salary plus paid expenses.

In comparison, former Liberal premier Kathleen Wynne earned just under $209,000 last year, according to the province’s annual list of public sector salaries.

Devlin previously served as CEO of Humber River hospital, where Ford’s brother, the late Rob Ford, was first admitted after he became ill in 2014. Devlin personally helped the family during that time.

As hospital CEO, he made close to $500,000, according to the salaries list.

The Tories, who campaigned on a promise of fiscal responsibility and respect for taxpayers’ money, said this spring that Devlin had been tapped to help craft their health-care policies.

Ford has also railed against executive salaries and, since becoming premier, has put public service managers under a wage freeze. He has also ordered a review of management and executive compensation in the public service.

The Tory leader has also fired the province’s chief scientist and, according to media reports, its chief investment officer and the premier’s business adviser.

Progressive Conservative legislator Lisa MacLeod defended Devlin’s appointment and salary on Friday, saying the party had simply delivered on its campaign promise to hire him.

“We were very clear on the campaign trail that we wanted to draw from his expertise in the health-care field and that his job will be reaching out to others throughout the world and in particular across North America and through Europe to see how we can best advance our health-care practices,” she said.

“He is going to be worth every penny, we’re going to see that in the results.”

Devlin has also wielded some influence within the party, leading the charge for a leadership review of then-leader John Tory after the 2007 provincial election.

‘It is time for you to step aside’: Toronto officer sends email calling out mayor over gun violence

An email from within the Toronto Police Service (TPS) criticizing mayor John Tory over the recent rash of shootings in the city has reached the mayor’s office.

It is addressed to “Mr. Tory” and calls him a “direct contributor” to the shootings by supporting “the cancellation of the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS) program.”

“You flip-flopped on carding and supported its demise. You forced budget and staffing cuts on the Toronto police,” read the email.

It’s signed by Mark Hayward, who also happens to be a veteran sergeant with the TPS.

Joanna Angel Porn Star and Feminist who likes Yellowface

Just found another Racist Feminist.

in 2013

Known for its hardcore X-rated parodies of the horror genre—Evil HeadFuckensteinRe-Penetrator to name a few (links NSFW)—porn company Burning Angel just wrapped filming on its spoof of AMC’s The Walking Dead. Writer/director/actress Joanna Angel published behind-the-scenes photos of the cast in makeup on her blog. Mixed in with the special effects decayed zombie flesh and bloody wounds is a shot of a caucasian man with yellow foundation and his eyes taped back to give them a slanted look. He’s playing Glenn, an Asian-American. In both the comic book and the TV show Glenn is of Korean descent and played by Korean-American actor Steven Yeun.

Perhaps Angel couldn’t find an Asian person to play Glenn for a number of different reasons. (Maybe Keni Styles wasn’t in her budget?) Glenn is a pivotal character in The Walking Dead, so it’s understandable that she couldn’t cut him from the script. But if there’s a complete and utter lack of Asian porn performers (doubtful), then why not just abandon the attempt to stay “racially true” to the original? It’s not like the show uses Glenn’s ethnicity as a plot point; it doesn’t define him. You could cast anyone in the role.

One year Later in 2014 she admitted she is a Feminist

A feminist’s predilection for openness and honesty extends to post-coital conversation. We have no qualms about commitment-free arrangements if it’s just sex that we want. “I really respect it when a guy agrees that we’re just going to fuck,” says feminist porn actress Joanna Angel. “I much prefer that to someone feeding me a bunch of bullshit.” Consider yourself told.

White man loses job after calling police on black family at pool

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A white man who challenged a black family’s use of a private community’s pool has not only resigned from the homeowners association board — he’s lost his job.

Sonoco announced Friday that Adam Bloom is no longer employed by the packaging and industrial products company, saying it doesn’t condone discrimination of any kind, even if it happens outside its workplace.

video posted on the Facebook page of Jasmine Edwards on July 4, seen more than 4 million times, shows what happened after Bloom questioned whether she was allowed to be at the pool in Winston-Salem. He also called police.

Bloom, Edwards and the responding officers all speak in measured tones in the video. She accuses him of singling out her and her young son as African-Americans by asking to see her ID. Bloom, who served as the chairman of the pool, responds that he asks residents to see their identification “a couple times” each week.

Officers then determined that Edwards, who lives in the neighborhood, did in fact have keycard access to the gated pool.

An officer then apologized to her. When Edwards asked Bloom for an apology, he walked away.

On Facebook, Edwards accused Bloom of racial profiling: “This is a classic case of racial profiling in my half a million $$ neighborhood pool. This happened to me and my baby today. What a shame!!”

The social media backlash was fierce, and soon targeted Bloom’s employer. In a Twitter post, South Carolina-based Sonoco apologized to Edwards and said the situation doesn’t reflect company values.

“We are aware of a terrible incident involving the actions of one of our employees outside the workplace,” the statement said, adding that the “employee is no longer employed by the company in any respect.”

Company spokesman Brian Risinger confirmed that Bloom’s separation was “effective immediately.” Risinger said Bloom was a business development manager who had been with Sonoco for about five years.

An attorney for Bloom told the Winston-Salem Journal he had simply been performing his duties as a neighborhood official after another woman approached Bloom questioning whether Edwards had the right to be poolside.

Lawyer John Vermitsky said his client called police to “make sure that the interaction didn’t escalate,” and said it’s “unfortunate that conclusions are being reached by people who have seen a 46-second video of their interaction.”

Police Chief Catrina Thompson warned that her officers “will not be used as pawns to further someone’s dislike for anyone.”

The Glenridge Homeowners Association said Thursday afternoon that Bloom resigned as the pool’s chairman and association board member.

“We sincerely regret that an incident occurred yesterday at our community pool that left neighbors feeling racially profiled,” the association statement says. “In confronting and calling the police on one of our neighbors, the pool chair escalated a situation in a way that does not reflect the inclusive values Glenridge seeks to uphold as a community.”

Vermitsky said Bloom resigned from his neighborhood positions to limit negative publicity, and not because he did anything wrong.

Patients Forced to Kill Themselves in Assisted Suicides Because They are Refused Palliative Care

Legalizing euthanasia can stunt the palliative-care sector. The Netherlands, for example, has traditionally performed comparatively poorly in this field. Indeed, one doctor once infamously said he didn’t need palliative care when he had euthanasia.

Now, in Quebec, the head of provincial medical association — who supports euthanasia — warns that some patients have been forced to “choose” to be killed because they couldn’t access quality palliative care. From the McLean’s story:

Provincial foot-dragging on plans to substantially expand palliative care services is actually denying patients the very choice that was promised in the shift to MAiD, and making it increasingly problematic to discern which patients truly wanted to have a doctor deliberately end their life, [Collège des Médicins President, Dr. Charles] Bernard says.

“In certain identified cases, patients, for the lack of (palliative) care, might have had no choice but to ask for medical assistance in dying to end their days ‘in dignity,’ which deeply concerns us,” the Collège president tells the minister.

Worse, he adds, the Collège has been hearing increasing concerns from its member doctors about re-direction of already scarce resources from palliative care to medical assistance in dying, which risks a violation of both the letter and the spirit of Quebec’s law governing end-of-life care.

Paint my expression as completely unsurprised. The delivery of proper palliative care requires specialized training and can be very labor intensive. The most difficult cases may demand a great deal of inadequately compensated time from the doctor. Euthanasia doesn’t require anything like that kind of expertise.

Indeed, the least trained or most inept doctors in dealing with serious conditions are quite capable of providing death. Jack Kevorkian was a pathologist with no experience after medical school and residency in treating living patients.

In California, the Life Legal Defense Foundation learned in a lawsuit that a large percentage of lethal prescriptions in California have been written by Lonnie Shavelson — a euthanasia crusader, not board certified in any specialty, much of whose medical career he spent as a part-time ER doctor, and who mostly pursued journalistic endeavors in recent years rather than treating patients.

Defenders of assisted suicide will respond to that charge by saying that prescribing morphine increased after legalization in Oregon — which is true. But it also increased in Rhode Island after that state outlawed assisted suicide and provided greater legal protections for doctors who prescribe strong pain-controlling drugs.

Besides, I believe that legalizing assisted suicide — by definition — denies many of those who die by lethal overdose or lethal jab of essential palliative services.

Defenders of assisted suicide will respond to that charge by saying that many patients who take prescribed poison were in hospice. True. But they were denied suicide prevention intervention, an essential hospice service — as much a part of good palliative care as prescribing morphine.

Bottom line: Hospice/palliative care and euthanasia/assisted suicide are mutually exclusive. One cares. The other kills.
