Black man asked to leave pool at his apartment complex, property manager placed on leave

A man in Indianapolis said he was asked to leave the pool in his apartment building seemingly just because he was black.

It’s the second incident of profiling in as many days –- a white man called the police on a black mom at a neighbourhood pool in North Carolina on July 4.

In this incident, Shayne Holland said he was relaxing by the pool on July 5 at the River Crossing apartments, where he rents a unit for $1,600 a month.

That’s when a woman approached him and demanded to know where Holland lived.

He told her he lived in the building and showed her the fob key to the complex, but didn’t reveal his address.

“She didn’t introduce herself, she didn’t say hello,” Holland told the Indy Channel News. “She says, ‘Do you live here?’”

“I’m like, ‘I live over there, but if you’re asking me for my address, I mean, I don’t feel comfortable giving you my entire address without knowing who you are.”

The woman, who was later identified as an off-duty police officer, then went to get the property manager.

That’s when Holland started recording the incident.

The property manager can be heard on the video telling the off-duty officer that Holland indeed lives there, but she agreed with the officer and told him to leave the area despite knowing he lived in the building.

The manager told Holland he was asked to leave because he wasn’t answering the officer’s questions.

“Honestly, I don’t want to jump to racism. I don’t want to say she just pointed me out because I’m the only black dude in the pool, but that was the case,” he told Indy Channel.

He also said on Twitter that he asked everyone in the pool if they were required to provide proof of residence.

The manager has since been put on leave, pending an investigation by the company which manages the property.

But Holland says the incidents have kept happening.

In a separate video, Holland’s mother is asked to leave.

“We are not allowed in the pool until further notice for what? That I don’t know, that I don’t know, I am sorry,” Holland told NBC News 13.

“After a couple of days of the same thing, I think that there was some directive that there are not a lot of African-Americans that live in this community.”

Holland’s family says they intend to file a complaint with the police.

Reports of people calling the police on black people for seemingly no reason have increased in recent time.

Along with the two pool incidents, the police were called on a black politician who was canvassing her neighbourhood, and a family who purchased food at a Subway restaurant.

There was also the highly reported case of two black men at a Starbucks in Pennsylvania, who were deemed suspicious for no apparent reason.

Neighbor Calls Cops on 11-Year-Old Black Boy With a Paper Route

An Ohio mom and her two sons had their paper route interrupted last week when a police car pulled them over.

It seemed curious that police would be interested in the family, as they hadn’t done anything to warrant the attention of authorities. But as it turns out, someone had called the cops on Brandie Sharp’s 11-year-old son, Uriah.

The caller grew suspicious after seeing Uriah walk up to a house in Upper Arlington, Ohio, and come back with something in his hand. “It looked like at first they were delivering newspapers or something, but I noticed they were walking up to the houses with nothing in hand and one of them came back with something,” the caller told police, according to WSYX, “I mean, I don’t want to say something was going on, but it just seemed kind of suspicious.”

Uriah, though, had a completely reasonable explanation. He, his mom, and his 17-year-old brother Mycah had delivered some of the newspapers to the wrong homes, and he was retrieving them. Sharp tells WCMH that after a police officer pulled her over and asked if they were soliciting, she explained they were on a paper route and the situation was quickly resolved.

But Sharp wasn’t pleased someone had felt the need to call the police in the first place, and she thinks her son’s race played a factor. “Sad I cant [sic] even teach my son the value of working without someone whispering and looking at us out the side of their eye perhaps because we DON’T ‘look like a person that belongs in their neighborhood,'” she wrote in a Facebook post.

She was also left wondering what was so suspicious about a family delivering newspapers in broad daylight. “Something as simple as delivering papers and it turns out to be I have to be racially profiled?” she tells WSYX.

Arlington Police said on Facebook that the officer simply responded to a report of suspicious behavior, then “quickly determined” nothing nefarious was going on. Police also noted that a new law in Upper Arlington requires people delivering newspapers “to walk up to each home to correctly deliver these materials.”

This case is just the latest in a string of “Summer of Snitches” incidents involving authorities being called either to enforce petty regulations or for no reason at all. Just last week, for example, police were summoned to deal with a black man wearing socks at a pool. The white apartment complex manager who called police has since been fired.

‘Newport Nancy’ calls police on black woman smoking in a parking garage, sparking ‘Smoking While Black’

Introducing #NewportNancy, the latest hashtag star, who called the police on a black woman for smoking in a parking garage. The incident set off the new trend, #SmokingWhileBlack.

On Sunday, Stacy Etheridge, a mother in Wellington Manor, Georgia posted a Facebook video shot by her daughter who was smoking in the garage of her Buckhead, Atlanta apartment building when she was confronted by a woman in a neighboring car. Caucasian woman tells my daughter to put her cigarette out and decides to call the police on my daughter for smoking outside in a parking deck,” wrote Etheridge. “Police showed up and said it was no harm to others….this calling the cops on Blacks is getting way out of hand. Now you can’t smoke outside. #NewportNancy.”

In the footage, Etheridge’s daughter (whose name is unknown) says to the woman, “You said I can’t smoke here? You’re gonna have me kicked out? That’s what you said?”

To which the woman, wearing a green shirt, replies, “They’ll have you evicted for smoking on the property.” The daughter then asks, “Are you racist? Because I think you are. You just came out here harassing me for no reason.”

The woman makes a phone call from her car (it’s unclear if she’s calling the management company or the police) and can be heard saying, “There’s a resident here, who claims she lives here…” while the majority of the conversation is unintelligible.

The post derived 3.1K comments and 10K shares on Facebook. “[Shaking my head,] it seems like we are going back to the 60s[…] they are going to run on the wrong black person and all hell is going to break [loose],” wrote one person. Others added, “Please start arresting the idiots calling the police for none emergencies,” and “The Police have more pressing issues!”

Etheridge also commented, “You guys keep sharing to put these folks to shame and others who may think of doing the same acts… maybe they will think twice before they decide to call 911 for non-emergency calls and start charging a fine and save some lives. Bring awareness to the ignorance. 911 has become a weapon of choice against Blacks. It could be you or me tomorrow or your loved ones. Share, share, share. Let’s stop it now!!” She used the hashtag, #Weworkinnumbers.

On Twitter, many demanded the identity of the woman in the video.

Ontario reverting to old sex-ed curriculum in the fall, education minister says

https://torontosun.com/2015/03/02/liberals-cant-deny-levins-role-with-sex-ed-curriculum/wcm/744836e1-03e8-44c0-b10f-615c26ba14ff

TORONTO — Ontario’s education minister says the sex-ed curriculum taught to children in the coming school year will be an older version, not the controversial updated program brought in by the previous government.

Lisa Thompson says ministry staff are working to inform school boards of the decision to revert to the curriculum that was in place before 2015.

Thompson says the ministry will be moving quickly to consult parents on how to update the curriculum and details on that process will be coming soon.

Premier Doug Ford promised to repeal and replace the controversial sex-ed curriculum when he ran for the Progressive Conservative leadership and repeated the pledge during the spring election.

The new sex-ed curriculum sparked controversy, particularly among social conservatives, when the Liberal government introduced it.

It was the first time the curriculum had been updated since 1998 and included warnings about online bullying and sexting, but protesters zeroed in on discussions of same-sex marriage, gender identity and masturbation.

Thompson also says the ministry is looking into how to replace a $100-million fund earmarked for school repairs that was cut earlier this month.

The money was to be paid out from revenues of the cap-and-trade system, which Ford began dismantling almost immediately after taking office, as he had promised to do.

Thompson says the government will try to find internal sources to replace the funding, which was announced in April and cut earlier this month, surprising school boards that had just begun to spend the money.

‘Emotional nature’ of women make them unsuitable for leadership/witness roles, according to Islamic scripture and leaders

At Dundas square in downtown Toronto, there is a Islamic Dawah booth that gives out free information on Islam. One of the booklets that was given out is called ‘Women in Islam‘.

This book  points out the lesser leadership/witness abilities of women because of their emotional nature.

Following are some excerpts from ‘Women in Islam

“Divine wisdom has granted women, in general, very sensitive emotions, tender feelings, and a predisposition towards care and love of other members of the family. This makes a woman capable of her natural task of childbearing, nursing, taking care of all the needs of the young child, etc. Based on these emotional characteristics of the woman, she might very well follow her emotional inclinations and swerve from harsh realities due to an emotional involvement in a case. A woman’s loving and kind feelings might overcome what she has witnessed, and thus she may distort the story of her witness and testimony. At the same time the biological changes that occur in her body due to menses, pregnancy, child-birth and post-natal conditions reduce the sharpness of her memory and may make her forget the details of the issue. Therefore, a divine precautionary measure was established to eliminate any shortcoming on a woman’s part in any case of testimony. We would like to point out here one of the essential principles of the legal and judicial system in Islam, which states that the case is not valid for proceedings if a doubt arises in the case. Therefore, the strength of two female witnesses is intended to eliminate this doubt.”

The Islamic Circle of North America (Canada) website has an online teaching syllabus. Here you will find the book ‘The Gardens of the Righteous’, wherein you will see the same information about the lesser abilities of women in roles of leadership because of their emotional natures.

The Gardens of the Righteous (Arabic: Riyadh as-Salihin), is a compilation of verses from the Qur’an and hadith by Al-Nawawi. It contains a total of 1905 hadith divided across 372 chapters, many of which are introduced by verses of the Quran. It also adds modern commentary to the verses from the Qur’an and hadith.

The following are excerpts from the book which deal with the differences between women and men in Islam:

“[Hadith]:1879. Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Prophet (PBUH) said, “O women folk! You should give charity and be diligent in seeking Allah’s forgiveness because I have seen (i.e., on the Night of the Ascension to the highest heavens) that dwellers of the Hell are women.” A woman amongst them said: “Why is it that the majority of the dwellers of Hell are women?” The Prophet (PBUH) replied, “You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. In spite of your lacking in wisdom and failing in religion, you are depriving the wisest of men of their intelligence.” Upon this the woman asked: “What is the deficiency in our wisdom and in our religion?” He (PBUH) replied, “Your lack of wisdom can be well judged from the fact that the evidence of two women is equal to that one man. You do not offer Salat (prayer) for some days and you do not fast (the whole of) Ramadan sometimes, it is a deficiency in religion.”

[Muslim].

“Commentary:

“l. In this narration, certain weaknesses of the female sex have been pointed out, which are natural and pertain to the woman’s biology, psychology and embryology.

“According to biologists, during and before menstruation, a female’s thought process is affected. Similarly, her pulse and blood pressure are also altered. Females are also more prone to hysteria. For these reasons, the Qur’an has declared that when you have to appoint or choose witnesses among women, you should choose two in place of one man. Modern researches have proved this rule to be correct on the basis of biology, psychology and embryology.

“Again we know that physically speaking, the female has been named as the weaker sex. For these reasons, females have been excused from earning their livelihood. For earning livelihood, one may have to go out and work hard. Women have been exempted from this duty because of their biological differences and other considerations of Shari`ah. Present-day women who are ignorant of Islam and modern researches are not prepared to accept these scientifically and religiously proved facts. The West claims equality between the sexes. But this equality has not been established so far. Today all the important posts are occupied by males and all the international policies are framed by them alone. Even matters pertaining to women are decided by them. They have mostly relegated them to the posts of workers, secretaries and stenographers for their sexual satisfaction and enjoyment. After a struggle for hundred years, their condition today proves that they are the weaker sex.

“So, it is both beneficial and more respectful for her to limit herself to the sphere of action suggested for her by Islam. If she oversteps her sphere, she will certainly lose her female dignity and prestige, as has happened in the West. Her state and condition there is an eyeopener for all.

“2. Women should request forgiveness from Allah very often and be generous in charity. They should not show ungratefulness to their husbands and should avoid backbiting and cursing others so that they may save themselves from Hell.”

Canadian Muslim scholar: women are “ineligible for the position of head of state”

Dr. Jamal Badawi, the Vice-Chairman of the Islamic University, a former professor at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia and an activist with the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), presented a similar view in his book “Status of Women In Islam” which is being sold at ISNA bookstore in Mississauga. The following are excerpts from the book (p.16-17):

“Although not mentioned in the Qur’an, one Hadeeth of the Prophet is interpreted to make woman ineligible for the position of head of state. The Hadeeth referred to is roughly translated: “A people will not prosper if they let a woman be their leader.” This limitation, however, has nothing to do with the dignity of woman or with her rights. It is rather, related to the natural differences in the biological and psychological make-up of men and women.”

“According to Islam, the head of the state is no mere figurehead. He leads people in the prayers, especially on Fridays and festivities; he is continuously engaged in the process of decision-making pertaining to the security and well-being of his people. This demanding position, or any similar one, such as the Commander of the Army, is generally inconsistent with the physiological and psychological make-up of woman in general.”

“It is a medical fact that during their monthly periods and during their pregnancies, women undergo various physiological and psychological changes. Such changes may occur during an emergency situation, thus affecting her decision, without considering the excessive strain which is produced. Moreover, some decisions require a maximum of rationality and a minimum of emotionality – a requirement which does not coincide with the instinctive nature of women.”
