Port Credit GO station elevator still broken after 2 weeks

The elevator at the Port Credit GO station is still out of service more than two weeks after it broke down.

Metrolinx initially told CityNews there was a repair shortage province-wide but the elevator would be fixed by last Friday. Five days later and it’s still out of service.

On Monday, CityNews reached out to Metrolinx for an update and got this email response:

“Our elevator repair contractor was there on Friday and managed to start the fix. They are back this morning to finalize the repairs. They will be there for the most of the day fixing it and we are told it should be up and running by the end of the day,” spokesperson Scott Money wrote.

But one day later, CityNews reporter Shauna Hunt, who walks by the elevator twice a day, snapped another picture this morning showing an orange pylon and out of service sign.

Vegan Murder Files: Vegan is found guilty of condoning terrorism for saying she had ‘no sympathy’ for butcher murdered by ISIS fanatic in French supermarket

A vegan who posted a Facebook message offering ‘zero sympathy’ for a butcher killed by an Islamist militant during an attack in France last week has received a suspended jail sentence.

Vegan cheese maker Myriam-Serge Jouglet appeared before a judge on a charge of condoning terrorism on Thursday.

She lives in Saint Gaudens, a village not far from the Pyrenees mountains and the town of Trebes, hit by last week’s attack.

‘So then, you are shocked that a murderer is killed by a terrorist.’ wrote the animal rights activist, named as Myriam by local media. ‘Not me. I’ve got zero compassion for him, there’s justice in it.’

The message sparked outrage online – with France in deep mourning for the four victims of the gunman’s rampage – and the message was later deleted.

The defendant received a suspended prison term of seven months, meaning she will not serve any time behind bars unless she re-offends, local prosecutor Cecile Deprade told AFP.

Anyone suspected of approving terrorism or commenting on it favourably can be charged under French law.

Doing so on the internet carries a maximum seven-year jail term and a fine of up to £87,000.

The first domestic violence law in the US was gender neutral

It has often been claimed that wife-beating in nineteenth-century America was legal… Actually, though, several states passed statutes legally prohibiting wife-beating; and at least one statute even predates the American Revolution. The Massachusetts Bay Colony prohibited wife-beating as early as 1655. The edict states: “No man shall strike his wife nor any woman her husband on penalty of such fine not exceeding ten pounds for one offense, or such corporal punishment as the County shall determine.”

Nichole Burgan who falsely accused former State Assembly candidate Phil Graham of groping and forcibly kissing her now faces criminal charges.

ENCINITAS — A North County woman who falsely accused former State Assembly candidate Phil Graham of groping and forcibly kissing her now faces criminal charges stemming from her claims.

According to Superior Court records obtained by The Coast News, the District Attorney’s office has charged Nichole Burgan with misdemeanor filing of a false police report stemming from the claims made during the lead up to the June 5 primary election.

Graham, who failed to advance to the Nov. 6 general election after finishing in third place during the primary, is the stepson of former California Gov. Pete Wilson.

Burgan said that Graham forcibly kissed her during the early morning hours of May 14 after a night of drinking at the 1st Street Bar in Encinitas.

But variations in her story to different media outlets and a series of restraining orders filed against Burgan in the past that accused her of filing false reports raised doubts about the veracity of her claims.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department investigated and disproved the claims after reviewing video surveillance inside and outside of the bar and interviewing several witnesses.

Records show that charges were filed against Burgan June 14, and she was arraigned on July 3 and charged with a single misdemeanor count of filing a false report, which carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.

The criminal complaint alleges that Burgan, on or about and between May 20 and May 23 “did unlawfully report to a peace officer that a misdemeanor had been committed, knowing such report to be false.”

She is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 10 for a readiness conference and a trial date is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 31 at the Superior Court’s North County courthouse.

The District Attorney’s office declined to comment, citing the pending criminal proceedings.

Burgan is being represented by the San Diego County Public Defender. The Coast News reached out to Deputy Public Defender Peter Tran, who is handling the case, and will update the story with comment from Tran when we receive it.

The Coast News also reached out to Graham’s campaign manager Mike Foster, who said that Graham “didn’t push for charges” to be filed against Burgan.

Foster said he would provide a statement from Graham before print publication.
